I bet you have seen the Nationwide Bank advert? It is VERY annoying and features Dominic West.

Well, it has come back to haunt them.

In the ads, West, 53, lampoons the self-entitled boss of a fictional High Street lender, who treats his customers and staff with distain and is obsessed with the size of his office and his lavish expense account lunches.

The comically monstrous CEO suggests shutting down branches to save money and mocks the plight of customers who lost their life savings as ‘a total yawnfest’.

It comes as Nationwide Building Society has told nearly 500 staff they are at risk of redundancy, just weeks before the Christmas holidays, reports The Guardian.

Streamline

The cuts are part of a sweeping restructuring programme, launched under its chief executive, the former TSB boss Debbie Crosbie, which is meant to “streamline” head office operations by changing reporting lines or slashing jobs.

The exercise will ultimately affect 1,000 staff.

The general secretary of the Nationwide Group staff union, Tim Rose, said he was “disappointed” by the job losses.

“Although our experience of change programmes suggests that some impacted employees will welcome the chance to leave Nationwide with a severance package and pursue new opportunities, many will be extremely anxious about their future, particularly at a time of economic uncertainty and cost of living pressures,” the union told staff in a recent newsletter. “This will doubtless extend beyond the group directly impacted by these proposals.”

There has also been anger as Nationwide ordered workers back to office.

After a year of remote working sparked by the Covid pandemic, researchers for Ipsos Mori asked staff where they would like to work in future.

Only 6% said they wanted to go back to the office every day.

More than half, 56%, declared they wanted to work from home forever.
