The government’s announcement of sweeping new restrictions on overseas care worker visas has sparked fierce backlash and risking pushing the UK’s fragile care system to the brink of collapse.
Care homes will no longer be allowed to recruit staff from abroad, a sector that has long relied on foreign workers to plug chronic staff shortages.
Applications for the health and care worker visa have already plunged by 70 per cent in a year, from 129,000 to just 26,000, while more than 100,000 vacancies remain across England’s care sector.
International recruits were also significantly less likely to take days off sick and more likely to have met the care certificate standards, which state basic expectations of care workers, than British staff, according to Skills for Care research.

In response, Richard Tice has a plan.
LBC shared the clip. ‘You can’t make a lifestyle choice to sit on your backside and watch telly whilst people pay your benefits.’ @TiceRichard wants people out of work to train in social care, or it’s ‘end of benefits.’
