Penny Mordaunt has decided to rebrand food banks on X (formally Twitter). The senior Tory has called them “community pantries.”

It appears she didn’t come up with the phrase, but the use of it and the happy smiling picture has sent people into orbit.

It seems that they are not quite food banks, as you still have to pay!

Three new pantries, through which people facing financial difficulties can buy heavily-discounted groceries, it has been reported.

Community pantries

‘Winter and the run-up to Christmas can be a difficult time for many people,’ Ms Mordaunt said. ‘I wanted to expand the food pantry offer to all parts of my constituency.’

Penny tweeted: “Thank you to everyone who helped get these community pantries set up, especially in Paulsgrove and Baffins wards. Whether you’ve helped get the word out, volunteered, shopped, donated or grown fruit and veg. We’ve enough funds for a further one and will have exciting news soon.”

Face recognition

It comes as privacy advocates are urging food banks to stop using facial recognition software, claiming it poses a serious risk to users’ “privacy, dignity and security”.

Several food banks in London are asking users to submit face scans to allow them to choose food from shops. The Face Donate app-based system also has the potential to track purchases, reported The Guardian.

Dear Ms Mordaunt
To call a food bank a “community pantry” is disgraceful.
People going hungry under your watch is not to be sugar soaped.
It’s a disgrace. pic.twitter.com/yv5aBwFNM9

What a wonderful world it would be if people were paid properly for the work they do – the fact that things like this exist means that doesn’t happen here in the UK.

Is the food free petal, as the local rag seems to indicate the food is discounted.

Hey Penny! Do you think community pantries should be needed?

Also, do you have a favourite cheese?

Every single food bank that exists is a damning indictment of the failures of your government. Nothing about their existence should be celebrated.
