Suella Braverman slammed for laughing pic on roof of Rwanda building

Sending ‘unwanted’ migrants to Rwanda has to be one of the most controversial policies for many years.

Priti Patel kicked off the idea and Suella Braverman looks more than keen to carry the plan forward (or backwards in time).

Braverman was visiting the country and had a little look around some of the places the migrants are due to be housed.

During this visit she joked: “I really like your interior designer. I need some advice for myself.”

Media ban

Also there has been outrage at the unusual level of control imposed on media coverage of the home secretary’s trip to Rwanda has grown this weekend during Suella Braverman’s first hours in the country.

Prominent names, including news presenters, academics and opposition MPs expressed shock at what they considered the partisan reporting of the trip from the right-wing news organisations invited to join the trip. The Guardian, BBC, Mirror, Independent and i Newspaper were barred.

However it has since been reported that BBC Africa have been present throughout the trip. Other media organisations attending are funding their work on the home secretary’s visit themselves, with no government plane provided.

Perhaps a journalist could have declared they were an illegal immigrant and got a free flight there, that’s how mad this situation is?

Laughing pic

A picture of the home secretary tilting her head back and laughing on the roof of a building in Rwanda has angered many.

The image – taken by PA photographer Stefan Rousseau – has in fact been cropped, with the full picture showing Ms Braverman laughing with a woman and two men at the top of a building.

The government appear to think this makes the picture actually ok, and cropping it is unfair.

a Home Office spokesperson said: “The image has been cropped and taken clearly out of context. The photo was taken during a visit to see accommodation and opportunities which will be open to asylum seekers relocated to Rwanda through our groundbreaking partnership.

“The home secretary was welcomed by Rwanda’s minister of education and new construction graduates to modern, long-term accommodation which will support those who settle in Rwanda.”
