The new thing MPs can claim will astound you

The cost of giving their office a bit of festive cheer can also be passed to the taxpayer, according to the new guidance.

For the first time, MPs are now able to claim the cost of the food and beverages at their staff Christmas parties as an expense.

It means that taxpayers will foot the bill for the festivities, however the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority has advised that alcohol cannot be cited as “hospitality” (Ipsa).

In answer to frequently asked questions about how MPs and their employees can spend Christmas, the expenses watchdog offered its guidance.

It said “MPs can claim the costs of food and refreshments for an office festive” in their parliamentary or constituency offices.
