Do any European countries send asylum seekers to Rwanda as the Tories claim.

Sir Jake Berry MP claims Denmark and other EU countries send asylum seekers to Rwanda. This is missing important context. Denmark does not have such a system in place, and an EU scheme moves people to Rwanda from Libya due to political instability.

As Full Fact reports: However, Denmark is not currently sending asylum seekers to Rwanda and neither is any other EU country.

Although in 2021 Denmark passed a law that would enable it to send asylum seekers to a third country for processing, no deportations have ever taken place.

She was asked: “If the Rwanda policy works… would labour keep it if you win the election?”

Nandy replied: “Rwanda has cost the taxpayer a huge amount of money… this is just another outlandish nonsense claim from the Home Secretary… she can’t even do the basics of her own job.”
