Trump voters admit they ‘made a mistake’ after DOGE cuts as US citizens apply for British passports

“Just mass firings … it’s not good for a business to run that way,”

Some conservatives are expressing their Donald Trump voters’ regret after being affected by the recent DOGE mass layoffs.

More than 200,000 federal workers have already lost their jobs or been placed on administrative leave.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak criticised the “sledgehammer” approach Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has taken to cut administrative costs and implement mass firings at federal government agencies.

He told CNBC: “I definitely think that we should look for inefficiencies in government, but pretty much have a huge department that analyzes bit by bit by bit.

He then added, “Just mass firings … it’s not good for a business to run that way,” referring to DOGE’s deep cuts to jobs at several government agencies. “It’s really to find out what works and what doesn’t, make the changes.”

UK citizenship

It comes as over 6,100 US citizens applied for UK citizenship last year, a record high and up by 26% compared to 2023.

This trend is also clear in recent data since in the last quarter of 2024, there has been a 40% year-on-year increase.

“There’s much more interest than under the previous Trump administration,” Elena Hinchin, partner at the law firm Farrer & Co, explained to the FT, noting that the current political landscape across the pond was “a very serious driver” of American interest in UK residency.

DOGE

During Trump’s address to Congress he said: “I have created the brand new Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. Perhaps. Which is headed by Elon Musk, who is in the gallery tonight.”

DOGE claims to have saved $105bn already but that figure can’t be independently verified. Receipts have been published for $18.6bn worth of savings but accounting errors have been reported by US media outlets.

However, cutting a huge number of jobs might not go down too well…

Now, people are turning to X/Twitter to express their upset with one woman saying she felt “sick” and “made a mistake” voting for Trump in November.

Some people just love Trump more than their own jobs…

Lost my job today because of DOGE cuts and I still don't regret voting for Trump.
