Hastings said in an interview with the New European: “I think Sunak’s fate at the back end of this dreadful government is deeply unenviable, but there he is. And, of course, he’s always going to be remembered as the tail ender – the loser.”

“Yet he now looks on Conservatism with dismay – and contempt. In his view, the Tory Party is now little more than a hard-right shell, run by delusional third-raters who mistake personal ambition for leadership, and who have brought Britain to the point of disaster,” writes Jay Elwes in the piece.

However, the article ends with a positive (ish) tone when he is asked if the UK will rejoin the EU and he replies: “Oh, I’m sure we will.”
