How is Brexit going? According to a major supermarket boss, not very well.

It comes as the UK economy is facing a shortfall of 300,000 workers due to ending the freedom of movement since Brexit, reports The FT.

The UK in a Changing Europe and the Centre for European Reform think-tanks said that the ending of free movement was constricting the UK economy, leading to labour shortages in various sectors.

Jonathan Portes, professor of economics and public policy at King’s College, London, who co-authored the report, said the shift in migration patterns was “a feature, not a bug”.

Rose replied: “It’s been catastrophic… we are the only economy in the G7, possibly the G20, who have not yet recovered to pre-covid levels, that tells you something.”

Must have hurt @NickFerrariLBC to listen to this little factoid that most sensible business people have known since the get go. It is getting air time from "big names" now at least and the bloke from Wetherspoons has piped down now too! #BrexitReality https://t.co/kgVOmoLGZG

I voted for it.

But I’m sorry to admit, I underestimated the staggering incompetence of this #tory UK government. 🤡

You don't have to be a genius or expert to understand that if you put up barriers for British businesses to trade with their biggest market it will have a negative effect. When you make it more difficult & expensive for them to recruit, it has a negative effect.

This is, of course, not 'news' but a statement of the obvious, as @vivamjm explains on a daily basis.

Re-creating trade barriers where there were none with your nearest and biggest market only creates costs.

'Project Fear', they called it.
