A TV reporter has been shot while presenting live from the LA protests.
Gavin Newsom
It comes as California’s governor Gavin Newsom has essentially dared Donald Trump’s “border czar” Tom Homan to arrest him amid violent scenes in Los Angeles.
Protests against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in LA have descended into clashes between law enforcement and civilians after Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to the area against the state’s governor’s wishes on Sunday.
“If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can’t do their jobs, which everyone knows they can’t, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Trump sued
California is also suing the Trump administration for ‘illegal’ federalistion of national guard.
Speaking to Fox News, Gavin Newsom just said “there’s a reason we’re going to court tomorrow” adding he was confident they’ll succeed.
Asked to elaborate on the lawsuit, Newsom said that under Trump’s executive order, “it specifically notes – and under what the [Department of Defense] did – is they had to coordinate with the governor of the state. They never coordinated with the governor of the state,” he said.
Reporter shot
Australian reporter Laura Tomasi, US correspondent for Nine News, was shot on Sunday, while covering protests over ICE immigration raids.
Tomasi and a British photographer were hit by rubber bullets whilst reporting outside the Metropolitan Detention Centre as officers were dispersing protesters.
The reporter was quick to say “I’m good,” as a bystander yelled out, “You just f****** shot a reporter!”
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Dfat) gave a statement declaring that “all journalists should be able to do their work safely.”
