If only we could all come into a job, make a complete mess of it, then make millions afterwards, by telling people about it over dinner. Well, that’s what former PM Boris Johnson has been doing

He has been handed a £2.5m advance for speaking gigs as he boosted his mammoth earnings since he was turfed out of Downing Street.

It takes his outside income in the past 12 months to almost £5m, on top of the £84,000 salary he still receives as a backbench MP.

Taxpayer

If that was enough emerged last the taxpayer could end up contributing more than £222,000 in legal fees for the former prime minister’s defence.

Mr Johnson is also under pressure over his ties to BBC chair Richard Sharp, who has denied facilitating a loan of up to £800,000 for the then-prime minister before he backed his appointment to lead the broadcaster.

Boris Johnson has declared £4.8m of income since quitting as PM – 50 times his actual salary – is there any precedent for this?

Boris Johnson just admitted to having received £2.5 million for speeches he hasn’t yet given, to people we don’t know, and you want to talk about unions funding Labour? https://t.co/ucIS2ANlYm

I am starting an Urgent Appeal to fund #BorisJohnson's lifestyle.
Boris, bless him, has only trousered £2.5 million quid for speaking engagements recently.
Did you know Boris also does weddings and children's parties?

Boris Johnson earned £5 million in 5 months and still got £200k+ legal aid to defend himself over Partygate.

How much would you get if you were charged with murder and had a household income over £37,500?
