A fierce row has erupted between Labour and Reform UK as Nigel Farage gears up for a major speech on Tuesday. Labour chair Ellie Reeves launched a scathing attack on Farage’s personal history and his record on key issues.
🎩 “Privately-educated stockbroker and career politician”
Reeves did not mince her words:
“Nigel Farage, a privately-educated stockbroker and career politician, has only ever cared about his own self-interest and personal ambition, never about what is good for working people in this country.”
She listed ten occasions when she says Farage has “failed working people.”
🏥 Attacks on NHS and pensions
Reeves continued:
“Farage wants to abolish the NHS, praised Liz Truss’ disastrous mini-budget, opposed Labour’s landmark employment reforms and said Jaguar Land Rover, a huge employer, deserves to go bust.”
She then hit at his spending plans:
“His Reform manifesto included billions of pounds worth of unfunded spending pledges but did not commit to the triple lock. Farage must urgently clarify whether he will cut the state pension to pay for his reckless tax cuts.”
🗣️ Farage’s counter-attack
In his speech, Farage will label Prime Minister Keir Starmer “unpatriotic” and “out of touch.” He plans to criticise Starmer’s deal with the EU and the handover of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
He will also promise to:
- Reinstate winter fuel payments for all pensioners.
- Scrap the two-child benefit cap.
- Invite Starmer to a working man’s club up north to test who connects best with voters.
🐍 Echoes of “snake oil”
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner recently called Farage a “snake oil salesman” after he unveiled similar welfare promises. Labour aims to portray him as a purveyor of empty pledges.
⚖️ Labour’s own U-turn
Starmer hinted at restoring winter fuel payments but has not said when. He also signalled support for lifting the two-child cap. Farage will use these issues to show Labour’s indecision.
