Good Morning Britain presenter Ed Balls has criticised the government, describing Downing Street as in “complete chaos” following Sue Gray’s sudden resignation as No.10’s chief of staff. The unexpected departure of Gray, a key Labour figure, has sparked further questions about internal tensions within Keir Starmer’s top team.

During an interview with Defence Secretary John Healey, Balls raised concerns about Gray’s exit after weeks of speculation about her role in government. Gray claimed that the media attention around her future had become a “distraction to the government’s vital work,” leading to her decision to step down.

When asked by Balls, “What’s been going on in Downing Street?” Healey avoided directly addressing Gray’s resignation, instead pointing to the government’s work since taking office. He said, “People in the end judge governments by what they do, and not what they say… we’ve been getting on with the job.”

However, Balls interrupted Healey, describing Gray’s exit as “complete chaos.” Healey defended Gray, acknowledging her significant contribution to preparing Labour for government but agreeing that her presence had become a distraction.

Susanna Reid, Balls’ co-presenter, also expressed skepticism, questioning whether people would focus on Labour’s achievements given the controversy surrounding Gray’s resignation.

Gray, who famously led the partygate investigation, will now serve as Starmer’s envoy for nations and regions. In the meantime, Morgan McSweeney, who led Labour’s successful general election campaign, has been appointed to replace Gray as part of a broader shake-up in No.10.

Healey, speaking on Times Radio, was also asked whether Labour would have criticised the Conservatives if they were in a similar situation. He responded that the government remains focused on delivering its promises.
