Right-wing channel GB News is facing a fresh wave of complaints. During an episode of Headliners on 22 January, presenter Josh Howie used a homophobic slur that linked the LGBTQ+ community with paedophilia. This comment came while he was discussing a sermon by US Bishop Mariann Budde, delivered at a service attended by Donald Trump.

Complaint Count Rises

Ofcom has received 1,227 complaints about Howie’s comments. The backlash is so strong that the Good Law Project has launched a petition against GB News. The petition criticises the channel for “spouting hatred and toxic lies” and calls for Ofcom to take decisive action.

Just a ‘Joke’, Says Howie

Following the uproar, Howie doubled down on his remark. He claimed his comments were merely a “joke about paedophilia in the church”. He explained that his show is a comedy programme, and that his intent was to draw a connection between the sermon and what he described as the “wrong ‘uns” in the church.

Public Outcry and the Call for Accountability

Critics argue that linking the LGBTQ+ community with paedophilia is not only inaccurate but also dangerous. The petition warns that such remarks can stir up hatred and promote harmful myths. Viewers and campaigners alike are urging Ofcom to enforce the rules and hold GB News accountable.
