Keir Starmer’s keynote speech at the Labour Party conference took an unexpected and humorous turn when the prime minister made an awkward verbal blunder, much to the delight of social media users.

During a serious moment in which Starmer was calling for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Gaza conflict, he accidentally said “return of the sausages” instead of “return of the hostages.” The slip-up came just as the crowd erupted into cheers, leaving Starmer visibly pausing before attempting to correct himself.

The moment, caught on camera and quickly shared across social media platforms, has fueled a wave of online mockery. Clips of the blunder have gone viral, with users poking fun at the prime minister’s unexpected call for sausages rather than addressing the delicate issue of hostages.

For Starmer, this was hardly the standout moment he would have hoped for at the first Labour conference in 15 years with the party back in government. Instead of focusing on his policy points, online discussions have fixated on his verbal mishap.

Many compared Starmer’s slip to Liz Truss’s infamous “pork markets” shout-out at the 2014 Conservative Party conference, suggesting that perhaps the Labour leader had sausages on his mind.

While Starmer’s speech was meant to rally his party and set out his vision for the future, the “sausage” blunder has become the main talking point of the event, with users online showing no signs of letting it go anytime soon.
