If Labour gains power, one of its goals will be to “restore trust in politics” by replacing the House of Lords with an elected body.
The party will run a survey on how to ensure “regional voices” are incorporated as well as the makeup of the new-look Lords.
Shadow work and pensions secretary Jonathan Ashworth stated that if Labour wins the next general election, it will immediately modify the way peers are chosen.
Speaking to Sky News’ Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme, Ashworth said: “There is obviously great expertise in the House of Lords, of course, and there are very good people in the House of Lords, but we need to bring it into the 21st century – it needs to be a modern second chamber and therefore it should be elected.
“I think when trust in politics is so low, because of the actions of Boris Johnson… I think the time is right to democratise the House of Lords.”
