Labour suspends MP Mike Amesbury after assault footage

The video showed the MP for Runcorn and Helsby punching a man, who fell to the floor.

Labour has suspended Runcorn and Helsby MP Mike Amesbury following CCTV footage showing him in a street fight.

The video shows Amesbury punching a man, who falls to the ground, as Amesbury continues to strike him. The altercation only ends when bystanders step in.

Labour spokesperson confirms temporary suspension

A Labour spokesperson stated, “Mike Amesbury MP is helping Cheshire Police investigate a Friday night incident. Until inquiries conclude, the Labour party has suspended his membership.”

Cheshire Police provide update on investigation

Cheshire Police confirmed they questioned a 55-year-old man, believed to be Amesbury, under caution. He was released while police continue their investigation.

A Conservative party spokesperson said, “Mr Amesbury has questions to answer, and it’s important they’re investigated fully.”

Earlier footage shows Amesbury’s heated exchange

A second video circulated on social media over the weekend shows Amesbury arguing with the man on the ground. In the footage, Amesbury says, “You won’t ever threaten me again.” He points, adding, “Yes, I am [the MP], and you won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?”

Amesbury responds to street incident

In a Saturday statement, Amesbury said he felt “threatened on the street after a night out with friends.” He added, “I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened.” Amesbury said he wouldn’t comment further but will cooperate with police if needed.

Labour’s stance on the investigation

Labour confirmed it knows of the incident and that Amesbury will work with police. When asked if Labour was conducting its own investigation, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said, “Mike Amesbury has approached the police and is cooperating with their investigation.” She added, “It’s a matter for the police, and we want to let them do their work.”
