In his first Prime Minister’s Questions, Rishi Sunak defended his decision to reappoint Suella Braverman as Home Secretary less than a week after she had resigned due to a security breach by claiming she had committed a “mistake of judgement” for which she had expressed regret.

Sunak made his first appearance in the Commons today after being chosen as the Conservative leader on Monday and as prime minister the following day.

Since then, he has been under fire for reinstating Braverman to the position of Home Secretary during a significant cabinet upheaval, just six days after she was forced to leave for violating the ministerial code after using her personal email to share official materials.

In the PMQs session, Labour leader Keir Starmer questioned Sunak’s choice to rehire Braverman, claiming Truss had fired her for “pinging about” confidential documents.

In addition, he charged that the Prime Minister made a “grubby deal” by promising Braverman her job back in exchange for her backing in the leadership contest.

Lawyer Peter Stefanovic didn’t take lightly to Sunak’s performance today either.

Anyone who thought Sunak’s Government would not be a rehash of Boris Johnson’s watch this! Decency & integrity have been thrown out the window of Downing Street in less than 24 hours!
