Mike Galsworthy warns Starmer: “You can’t keep ignoring Brexit realities”

“He cannot keep saying ‘no’ to reality forever. Public support for such a scheme is overwhelming, and it would clearly do a power of good.”

Keir Starmer is facing growing calls to rethink his Brexit stance, with pro-EU voices urging the Prime Minister to accept the reality of the UK’s departure from the European Union. Renewed pressure comes as the fallout from Brexit continues to impact the nation’s economy and global position.

Brexit Blamed for Economic Woes

This week, the Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, broke the silence around Brexit’s effects, citing it as a key factor in the UK’s sluggish economic growth. His comments highlight the increasing strain Brexit has placed on the country’s economic trajectory.

Meanwhile, Starmer has been attempting to “reset” the UK’s relationship with the EU through individual agreements. However, progress remains slow, and calls for broader alignment are growing louder.

Youth Mobility Scheme Back in Focus

One major issue now dominating discussions is the reinstatement of the EU’s youth mobility scheme. This programme, lost in Brexit negotiations, allowed young adults to travel and work freely across EU member states.

The European Council is reportedly eager to reintroduce the scheme, but a formal agreement with the UK government will be required. Although Starmer has previously rejected the idea, geopolitical pressures—such as Donald Trump’s return to the White House—could force his hand.

Trump’s “America First” policies risk further isolating the UK from its allies, leaving Starmer with little choice but to reconsider reversing certain Brexit measures to strengthen ties with the EU.

Calls for Action from Pro-EU Figures

Mike Galsworthy, Chair of European Movement, has urged Starmer to prioritise youth mobility in negotiations with the EU. He argues that ignoring the scheme would not only harm future opportunities for young people but also run counter to public opinion.

“The EU expects a conversation on youth opportunity and mobility in any negotiations with Keir Starmer,” said Galsworthy. “He cannot keep saying ‘no’ to reality forever. Public support for such a scheme is overwhelming, and it would clearly do a power of good.”

Galsworthy also highlighted that this offers Starmer a chance to negotiate a bespoke agreement tailored to Britain’s needs, stating that refusing to engage would fall short of acting in good faith.

A Decision with Global Implications

With the UK’s economic recovery stagnating and geopolitical tensions rising, Starmer’s approach to EU relations could shape Britain’s future on the world stage. Whether he chooses to embrace closer alignment with Europe or maintain a firm Brexit stance, the stakes could not be higher.
