New Gary Stevenson ‘millionaire’ clip goes viral

"Gary's the most relevant finance YouTuber in the time that we are in, he's emphasis on inequality is what people really need to hear right now" wrote one person in response.

Economist and former Citibank trader Gary Stevenson has sparked a debate on social media regarding the myth that hard work alone can lead to financial success. Stevenson argues that the system inherently disadvantages those from less privileged backgrounds, challenging the common narrative of meritocracy.

His discussions highlight the role of privilege and luck, not just effort, in achieving wealth, based on his personal journey from poverty to millionaire status and subsequent critique of the financial system.

Since 2020 he’s been running a YouTube channel, GarysEconomics, explaining to his many subscribers how the rich have grabbed everyone else’s money.

He was born in Ilford in east London: “I grew up in a tiny little bedroom. I had one drawer under my bed with everything I owned in it. I’m not good at owning shit, I’m not good at decorating shit, I’m good at talking about economics.”

Spreading the message that "there's nothing wrong with the world, you just aren't working hard enough" is evil lol https://t.co/DUYpHlSjRn

Gary is very right but it annoys me that the main advice some of these millionaires give is become an entrepreneur. Not everyone wants to own a business and not everyone has that desire. Why should that be the only gateway to having financial security? https://t.co/LfdR0ZwUBK

Gary is spot on. Working hard doesn't guarantee you'll become rich and let's be real 99% of us will never get into a position where we will be financially secure in our lives. Alot of people who are either got lucky or they did bad shit to get there. And thats just the reality https://t.co/B3rOv29Nho

Interesting debate. I think they're both right but the reality is the chances of you making it big from a poor background is really small. https://t.co/M0aBt6g0wG

Agree with Gary here and it’s nice to see someone loosen the theoretical bullshit for a bit and focus on the real world. Working hard means you have a greater chance of making it but there’s no guarantee anymore, and this dog shit government will make it harder year on year. https://t.co/kQtzvPEMWB

Very very important to amplify this lad’s message.

The idea that you should need to be a successful entrepreneur to own a house and feed your kids – and that if you aren’t it’s your own fault – is toxic. https://t.co/9urydpNzdz
