The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD), which takes place today (8 March), is ‘Embrace Equity’.

As their website says: “The aim of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme is to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren’t enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action. Read more about this here.”

So what are the government doing about? Really doing about we mean.

Well, today Stephen Flynn, the SNP leader at Westminster, asked Sunak to confirm that someone sex-trafficked to the UK could be denied asylum under the bill.

Sunak replied the government’s plans are based on compassion. He does not answer the question.

Flynn said he will take that as a yes.

He then said today the government has said 100 million people could come here. That is nonsense, he told the House.

“Who is inspiring the government, Nigel Farage or Enoch Powell?”

Sunak replied to say the figure is a UN one. If the government cannot control the asylum system, it cannot protect those in need, he said.

Stephen Flynn(SNP) – This Tory government said 100 million people could be coming to our shores… from whom are his government taking inspiration… Nigel Farage or Enoch Powell?

Reactions

1.

@RishiSunak deflected by saying the figure came from the United Nations. Flynn quoted specifically 'to these shores' which she did say. UN meant globally and included those who move within their own country. So the figures ARE rubbish – another Penny Mourdant moment. #toryliars
