Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced a significant increase in air passenger duty for private jet users. Her statement in the Commons included a pointed remark aimed at former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
50% rise in private jet duty
Reeves revealed that passengers on private jets will face a 50% increase in air passenger duty (APD). This measure is part of a broader effort to target the super-rich. The increase means that those flying on large private planes will now pay around £1,000 in APD for intercontinental flights.
Current impact of air passenger duty
Before this new increase, APD was already expected to generate £4.5 billion in the upcoming fiscal year. This figure equates to approximately £150 per UK household.
Reeves’ swipe at Sunak
While announcing the changes, Reeves made a playful reference to Rishi Sunak. She highlighted that the new levy would amount to about £450 per passenger on a private jet flight “to, say, California.” Sunak, known for using business jets and helicopters as prime minister, owns a £5 million beach house in California. Reports suggest he may move there after stepping down as Tory leader.
