Susanna Reid clashes with minister over government’s “difficult” winter fuel allowance cut

Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid expressed her frustration with a Home Office minister on Monday during a heated exchange over the government’s controversial decision to cut winter fuel payments.

As MPs prepare to vote on a proposal to limit winter fuel allowances to only those on pension credit, millions of elderly people could lose out on the financial support to help cover their heating bills. The divisive plan has sparked widespread discontent, with many Labour MPs considering rebelling or abstaining from the vote.

During the interview, policing, fire, and crime minister Dame Diana Johnson defended the decision, repeatedly describing it as a “difficult” one. However, Reid, visibly exasperated, challenged the minister’s response.

“Can you stop saying it’s a difficult decision?” Reid pressed. “We all understand you have to make choices. You made this particular choice. You didn’t find it difficult because you made it. So, is it the right decision?”

Johnson deflected by explaining that the decision came from the Treasury, not the Home Office, and acknowledged she would be voting for it, albeit “reluctantly.” She attributed the move to the need to address the £22bn shortfall in public finances, which Labour blames on the previous Conservative government.

Despite Johnson’s insistence that tough decisions had to be made, Reid continued to press her, asking directly if the minister believed the cut was the right course of action. Johnson avoided giving a definitive answer, instead pointing to the economic challenges left by the Tories.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also defended the unpopular cuts, telling the BBC over the weekend that while some decisions may be difficult, they are necessary for the long-term good of the country.

The winter fuel payment proposal has sparked a growing backlash, with Tuesday’s vote set to test the unity of Starmer’s government.
