Sir Elton John has slammed Labour ministers over the ongoing row about AI and copyright laws.
The pop star called Science Secretary Peter Kyle “a bit of a moron” for supporting plans that might let tech companies use artists’ work without paying for it. This row is part of the debate over the government’s Data (Use and Access) Bill, which is currently being discussed in Parliament.
⚖️ The AI Copyright Debate
The issue began when ministers rejected proposals from the House of Lords. The proposals would have forced AI companies to disclose what material they use to develop their programs. Elton John has strongly criticised the government for this decision.
Speaking to the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, Elton said the government’s plans would allow AI companies to “commit theft, thievery on the highest scale.”
He argued that while he can afford to fight for his rights, many others can’t. “When they’re creative, and it comes from the human soul, if you’re going to rob young people of their legacy and income, it’s a criminal offence,” he said.
💥 Elton John’s Strong Words
Sir Elton didn’t hold back. “I think the government are just being absolute losers. I’m very angry about it, as you can tell,” he said.
He also had harsh words for Peter Kyle, accusing him of being too friendly with tech companies. “Peter Kyle is a bit of a moron,” he added. He also said Keir Starmer needed to “wise up” about the threat to the creative industries posed by AI.
🎙️ The Government Responds
Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds responded, saying the government is working to find a balance. “We want to support the creative sector and remain a leader in AI,” he said.
He also disagreed with Elton’s comments about Peter Kyle, saying he didn’t think Kyle deserved to be called a “moron.”
A government spokesperson said, “We want both the creative industries and AI companies to thrive. We’re consulting on a package of measures that we hope will benefit both sectors.”
