On Thursday’s Question Time, a viewer suggested Lucy Connolly’s 31-month sentence should be quashed to free up prison space. He didn’t expect to be schooled on the spot.
⚖️ Who is Lucy Connolly?
Connolly, the wife of a Tory councillor, ranted online about migrants on the day of the Southport attacks. The Court of Appeal denied her appeal on Tuesday, with Lord Justice Holroyd ruling there was “no arguable basis” that her original sentence was “manifestly excessive.”

❓ “Quash her sentence” suggestion
When the conversation turned to prison overcrowding, one audience member argued:
“We should quash sentences like hers to relieve pressure on prisons.”
💼 Barrister’s swift rebuttal
Barrister and author Hashi Mohamed responded firmly:

“I would strongly recommend you read the judge’s sentencing.”
He added:
“It’s really important that you educate yourself on that before you say something like that.”
Mohamed explained that the judge “will have been following a particular set of guidelines” when deciding Connolly’s term. In short: know the law before you lay down the law.
