David Lammy didn’t hold back in the House of Commons this week – and Reform UK’s Sarah Pochin will be regretting she ever brought up Diego Garcia.
🛩️ A wild conspiracy theory appears
During a statement on the Middle East, Pochin stood up and suggested a bizarre link between the US airstrikes on Iran and the UK’s recent deal to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
She claimed the deal may have stopped American bombers from landing at Diego Garcia – a joint UK-US military base in the Indian Ocean – forcing them to dangerously refuel in the air instead.
Yes, really.
🤯 Lammy wasn’t having it
Foreign secretary David Lammy didn’t even pretend to humour her. His reply was sharp, savage, and swift:
“The honourable lady has got to get off social media, has got to get some help… because she is swallowing conspiracy theories that should not be repeated in this House.”
It was one of the most cutting Commons put-downs in recent memory – and Labour MPs were clearly loving it.
🏝️ The facts say otherwise
According to Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty, the US never even asked to use the Diego Garcia base during its recent strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.
So no, there was no bizarre “Mauritius deal” sabotage. Just another Reform MP chasing shadows instead of facts.
The 2019 International Court of Justice ruling said the UK should return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius – and the government has since started that process. But the military base? Still operational. Still very much in use.
