Donald Trump’s trip to The Hague has taken a royal twist – and not in the way he’d have hoped.

While meeting the Dutch royal family during this week’s NATO summit, Queen Maxima was caught on camera appearing to mock the former US President – and the internet wasted no time picking it up.

📸 Thumbs up, awkward moment

Trump was visiting King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima at Huis ten Bosch Palace on Tuesday as part of his whirlwind NATO tour.

As the trio posed for photographers, Trump gave the cameras a trademark thumbs-up with a beaming smile. But that’s when things got a little awkward.

In a clip now doing the rounds on social media, Queen Maxima appears to mimic Trump’s facial expression just after he says “thank you.”

The moment was subtle – but unmistakable. The queen then suddenly realised she was being filmed, making direct eye contact with the camera before it quickly zoomed out.

🤭 Social media reacts: “Queeeen Maxima! Love her!”

Online, reactions poured in – many praising Maxima for her apparent sass.

“I’ve never been a fan of our stiff monarchy, but Queen Maxima rocks it! Treat him like a baby,” one user wrote.

“Queeeen Maxima! Love her!” said another.

But not everyone was impressed. Some took issue with the queen’s behaviour, branding it “despicable” and “creepy.”

🤔 Was it shade or just a coincidence?

While some are convinced Queen Maxima was throwing subtle shade, others believe it may have been an innocent moment blown out of proportion.

Either way, it’s sparked a global conversation – and a few chuckles.
