Nigel Farage popped up in Parliament with his usual mix of bluster and bad ideas — and this time, he got absolutely steamrolled.
During a Commons debate on the delayed HS2 rail project, Labour transport secretary Heidi Alexander gave the Reform UK leader both barrels after he demanded the entire scheme be scrapped.
💸 Farage: “Scrap it!”
Farage used his brief appearance in the chamber to claim HS2 was only for “rich businessmen” and would suck the life out of the north.
He thundered:
“Surely the time has come to scrap the entirety of the project and recognise that we got it wrong.”
But Alexander wasn’t having it.
🛑 Alexander: “We’re not wasting £30bn to get nothing”
The minister fired back that the government wouldn’t abandon the project — especially after so much money had already been poured into it.
“We will not let Britain be a country that spends over £30bn on rail infrastructure, but then never sees a train running on it.”
She then pointed out the serious capacity issues between Birmingham and London — issues Farage was seemingly happy to ignore.
“I think those two great cities in our country deserve a railway that’s fit for the 21st century. I’m just sorry he doesn’t.”

🚆 What’s actually happening with HS2?
HS2’s launch has now been pushed back beyond 2033, after what Alexander called a “litany of failure” in its management.
Phase one — between London and Birmingham — will still go ahead, with renewed efforts to stop more money being wasted through contract chaos and scope changes.
Farage may want to derail the entire thing, but the government insists pulling the plug now would only mean billions wasted and nothing built.
