A newly elected Reform UK councillor has gone viral for all the wrong reasons — after admitting on live TV he had no clue about a major local issue.
🎤 ‘I have no idea’ — and he meant it
James Walker-Gurley, who was recently made cabinet member for economic development and asset management on Nottinghamshire County Council, faced the cameras for what should have been a routine local press interview.
It quickly became anything but.
Speaking to Notts TV, Walker-Gurley was asked about the council’s working relationship with the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) — a pretty key partner in delivering regional projects.
His answer?
“I have no idea, genuinely. I have no idea. I’ve not met with anyone from EMCCA yet.”
📄 Notes, laughs, and roundabouts
Asked about his priorities for Nottinghamshire, the councillor turned to a pre-prepared sheet of notes and named the Ollerton Roundabout.
Pressed on why this particular project mattered to local residents, he burst out laughing again:
“I don’t know, it just needs fixing.”
The moment quickly spread online, with Notts TV journalist Andrew Topping sharing the footage and noting, “It didn’t go well.”
Others described the councillor as a “rabbit in the headlights” with “no clue what he’s doing.”
💷 Big role, big salary
Walker-Gurley is one of 40 Reform councillors who swept into office during May’s local elections, helping the party seize control of Nottinghamshire County Council.
Despite the rocky start, he now oversees economic development and asset management for the county — a role that, with allowances, will pay him over £40,000 a year.
If this performance was his job interview, it’s fair to say most of us wouldn’t have got the call back.
