Wilfred Frost handed Tory frontbencher Robert Jenrick a lesson in accountability this morning. As Labour back-tracked on cutting winter fuel payments for 10 million pensioners, Frost pressed Jenrick on the Conservatives’ lack of an alternative policy.
❄️ Labour’s embarrassing U-turn
Keir Starmer reversed his own plan to scrap winter fuel payments after furious backlash and warned voters: he’d only filled a £22 billion “black hole” left by the Tories. The climb-down handed the opposition a momentary win—but Frost wasn’t about to let Jenrick bask in it.
❓ “Where’s your policy?”
With a cheeky smile, Frost noted:
“As with so many areas, we do await your actual policy – which I know are taking a while to formulate.”
Jenrick bristled:
“We do have a [winter fuel] policy, that’s not fair! We fought this.”
Frost fired back:
“OK, so does it go back to universal [payments]?”
❌ Dodge, duck and delve
Jenrick tried to pin the blame on Labour’s surprise U-turn:
“Keir Starmer only said that he’s going to do a U-turn at Prime Minister’s Questions, we haven’t even heard what his proposals are.”
Frost was having none of it:
“So what’s your view? Don’t criticise me for saying you don’t have your own policy yet—and then not provide me with your policy. What is your policy on this?”
Jenrick sputtered:
“You’re asking me to respond to something where Labour haven’t even said—”
Frost cut in:
“You were in government for 14 years. You know all the details about the winter fuel policies. What is your policy from here?”
💬 Still no answer
Jenrick ended with:
“We’ve opposed removing it! We voted against removing it! We will have to wait and see what Keir Starmer brings forward.”
Frost shrugged, hands in the air:
“Fine. So don’t criticise me for saying you don’t have your own policy yet.”
