A panellist on BBC Question Time has sparked applause by calling for a straightforward solution to the damage caused by Brexit.
Political commentator Sonia Sodha, known for her sharp insights, described the move as a “quick win” for the UK, saying it would make the country richer.
🤔 The Brexit Conundrum
During the show, a woman in the audience asked what could be done to fix the economic fallout from Britain’s 2016 decision to leave the EU.
Sodha, a former columnist for The Observer, didn’t hold back. She said, “The last thing you do as a country with our issues is put up masses of trade barriers with your closest trading partner. That was absolutely nuts.”
💡 Her Solution? Rejoin the Single Market
Sodha argued that the UK should look to rejoin the single market and customs union. She said, “As a quick win on growth – and it won’t be that quick because we’ve got to renegotiate – we should absolutely be looking to rejoin the single market and customs union.”
She added, “It is a no-brainer for us in terms of making us richer, and you and me better off because it’s one of the reasons why we’re poorer at the moment.”
🚫 Starmer’s Stance
However, not everyone agrees. Labour leader Keir Starmer has already ruled out rejoining the single market, the customs union, or bringing back free movement with the EU.
