A senior Conservative MP has accused both Nigel Farage and Donald Trump of excusing Vladimir Putin’s actions over the Ukraine war, labelling their comments as “Putin apologism.”
🔥 The Ukraine War: A Point of Controversy
Although Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 started the war, both Trump and Farage have repeatedly placed blame on Ukraine, calling the ongoing conflict into question.
Trump, who previously made promises to end the war swiftly, has shifted his position, stating that Putin may not be ready to bring the conflict to an end after all. Meanwhile, Farage, who has publicly expressed admiration for Putin in the past, now seems to be distancing himself from the Russian president.
⚡ Tory MP Calls Out Farage and Trump
In an interview with LBC’s Lewis Goodall, Kevin Hollinrake, shadow levelling up and housing secretary, accused both Trump and Farage of backing Putin’s actions. When asked by Goodall if Farage’s comment about NATO enlargement provoking Russia could be considered “Putin apologism,” Hollinrake firmly agreed: “I absolutely do, he’s let him completely off the hook.”
As Goodall probed further about Trump’s statements, Hollinrake didn’t hold back. He stated: “Some of the things Donald Trump is doing, I agree with – some of the things, I disagree with. But Trump’s position on Russia is plainly flawed, wrong.”
🧐 A Complicated Stance
Goodall pressed Hollinrake, asking whether he considered Trump a “Putin apologist” as well. Hollinrake confirmed, saying: “Well of course, he has done that. He has said that it is Ukraine’s fault that Russia invaded and Ukraine started the war.”
Hollinrake expressed his concerns about Trump’s stance, saying, “If you think it is Ukraine’s fault that Russia invaded a peaceful democratic nation, then I really think you need to look at some of the details behind that kind of statement.”
