Donald Trump is facing backlash after he encouraged US military troops to boo California governor Gavin Newsom during a speech — with many calling the moment “appalling” and “chilling”.
The dramatic incident unfolded at Fort Bragg just days after Trump sent the National Guard to Los Angeles in response to mass protests over immigration raids.
🔥 Trump vs Newsom feud heats up
Newsom had already accused Trump of launching an “assault” on democracy after the National Guard descended on LA.
In a fiery video statement, the California governor said Trump’s actions were a “brazen abuse of power” that had “inflamed a combustible situation”, putting lives at risk.
Rather than defusing the row, Trump decided to escalate.
Speaking to troops at Fort Bragg, he name-dropped Newsom — and encouraged the assembled soldiers to boo him.
😳 Reaction: ‘This is a different world’
The clip has sparked alarm online, with many Americans concerned about the politicisation of the military.
“The military isn’t supposed to be politicised. We’re way past that,” one person wrote.
“Imagine soldiers booing a governor just because they’re from another party. Wouldn’t have happened in 2008. This is a different world.”
Another said:
“First they booed the previous commander-in-chief. Now they’re booing whoever Trump tells them to. This is appalling and dangerous.”
And a third added:
“Military leaders are going to have to do some serious damage control. I’m gobsmacked.”
