Defence Secretary John Healey issued a strong warning to Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, revealing that a Russian spy ship recently entered British waters. The vessel was seen just 45 nautical miles from the UK coast on Monday.
Russian Spy Ship Enters UK Waters
Healey told MPs that this “foreign vessel” is used for gathering intelligence and mapping critical underwater infrastructure. He added that the Royal Navy has been tracking it closely.
“I also want President Putin to hear this message: We see you. We know what you are doing. And we will not shy away from robust action to protect this country.”
The Royal Navy deployed HMS Somerset and HMS Tyne to monitor the vessel, which so far has followed international navigation rules. Still, the UK remains vigilant.
A Submarine Surprise
Healey explained that a Royal Navy submarine “surfaced close” to the Russian ship, making clear that the UK was covertly observing its every move. This prompted the spy ship to move towards the Mediterranean. It is now in Dutch waters.
The minister also recalled that the same ship, Yantar, had wandered into British waters in November, “loitering” near vital undersea infrastructure.
More than One Close Call
According to Healey, RAF Typhoons recently scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft operating near the UK. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary also continues to protect offshore infrastructure.
He emphasised that these encounters are part of growing Russian aggression. The UK and its NATO allies are stepping up efforts to ensure Russian ships and aircraft cannot operate near the UK or NATO territory in secrecy.
Russia’s Ongoing Threat
Citing intelligence reports of a “reckless campaign of sabotage” across Europe, Healey stressed that “Russia remains the most pressing and immediate threat to Britain.”
While Russia might be “dangerous but fundamentally weak,” the UK is not taking any chances. As part of its response, Britain has sanctioned more than 100 ships in the Russian “Shadow Fleet,” more than any other nation.
