David Ward, head of the Communications Workers Union (CWU), said it is preparing to ballot its more than 100,000 members over further national strikes
It comes as Royal Mail’s CEO came under intense questioning during a select committee hearing.
Dave Ward told MPs on the business select committee on Tuesday that his union was “still not confident we are in a place that we can reach an agreement” following 18 days of national strikes in 2022.
“The union will be reballoting members [about strike action]. This is the most brutal attack on any group of workers the UK has seen in decades. It is a fight for every postal worker’s job.”
Parcels over letters?
It comes as Royal Mail has been accused by of breaching its legal obligations by prioritising parcels over letters.
Business Committee chair Darren Jones said a poster in a delivery office sent to him by a whistle-blower had told workers to favour delivering parcels.
He showed it to Royal Mail chief executive Simon Thompson.
Thompson replied he was aware of the sign but that it was “absolutely not our policy”.
Showing Thompson the poster, Mr Jones said “you are unilaterally only delivering on 50% of the USO (Universal Service Obligation)”
Jones then asked him if the poster represented overall Royal Mail policy.
Thompson denied that the message on the poster was company policy.
However, the committee chair sounded unconvinced and said: “I’d remind you Mr Thompson that misleading Parliament is not something that we appreciate here on the committee.”
Jones then asked the Thompson to write to the committee to ”prove” that this was not Royal Mail policy.
