Walt Disney Animation Studios has released a first look at Moana 2, the eagerly awaited sequel set three years after the original film. The story takes viewers back to the beautiful island of Motunui and reunites them with fan-favourite characters Moana and Maui. This time, Moana faces even bigger challenges as she steps into a new leadership role.

An expanded journey for Moana

During a press event at Disney Animation Studios in California, filmmakers previewed the first 30 minutes of the film, showcasing an epic journey that marks Moana’s growth. Director David Derrick Jr. shared how Moana 2 started as a web series concept but grew into a feature film. “We had to rework the story to fit a feature format,” Derrick explained, emphasising that the focus remains on Moana’s personal development and her journey as a young leader.

An epic story for the big screen

Disney Animation’s new Chief Creative Officer and Moana 2 co-writer Jared Bush expressed his excitement about expanding Moana’s story. “This is an amazing chance to tell Moana’s journey on a grand scale. Moving from a series to a feature film allowed us to elevate the visuals and emotions for the big screen,” Bush noted.

Co-director Dana Ledoux Miller provided insight into Moana’s character development, explaining that the sequel explores the responsibilities of leadership. “As you mature, you realise your choices impact others. We wanted to challenge Moana by showing her growth as a leader who understands the effects of her decisions,” Miller said.

Moana 2 is set to debut in Indian cinemas on 29 November 2024, with Disney promising an unforgettable mix of thrilling adventure and Moana’s journey of self-discovery.
