Quincy Jones, music icon behind Thriller, passes away

The producer behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller leaves a legacy spanning seven decades.

Quincy Jones, the legendary music producer and composer, has died at 91.

A Storied Career

Jones collaborated with music icons like Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, and Ray Charles. He is perhaps best known for producing Jackson’s iconic Thriller album, which remains one of the best-selling records of all time.

In 1985, Jones directed the all-star recording of the charity single We Are The World. He also composed the soundtrack for the 1969 British film The Italian Job, featuring Michael Caine.

Surrounded by Family

Jones passed away at his Los Angeles home on Sunday, surrounded by his family, confirmed by his publicist, Arnold Robinson.

In a heartfelt statement, his family said: “With full but broken hearts, we share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’s passing. Though this is a tremendous loss for us, we celebrate the remarkable life he lived, knowing there will never be another like him.”

Remembering Quincy

His family described him as “truly one of a kind” and said they would miss him dearly. They added, “We take comfort and immense pride in knowing that the love and joy, which defined his essence, was shared with the world through his creations. Through his music and boundless love, Quincy Jones’s heart will beat forever.”

In addition to winning 28 Grammy Awards for his work as a producer, Jones was also the recipient of an Academy Award and an Emmy.

A Legacy of Awards and Influence

Jones’s career spanned over 75 years, during which he won 28 Grammy Awards from 80 nominations. He was also named one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century by Time magazine.

Lionel Richie, who co-wrote We Are The World and was part of the song’s ensemble, called Jones “the master orchestrator”.

Personal Life

Jones was a father of seven and was married three times—to Jeri Caldwell, Ulla Andersson, and Peggy Lipton. His children include music producer Quincy Jones III and actress Rashida Jones, known for her roles in Parks And Recreation and the US version of The Office.
