Renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg has confirmed his participation as a producer in the anticipated sequel to “Ready Player One,” titled “Ready Player Two.” The announcement comes following the success of the first film, which grossed over $607 million worldwide upon its release in 2018.

Despite author Ernest Cline’s announcement of the sequel and Spielberg’s involvement, the project has yet to receive an official green light from Warner Bros., leaving fans eagerly awaiting further developments.

In a statement to Showbiz 411 during the Universal Pictures gala at Soho House following the 2024 Oscars, Spielberg shed light on his upcoming ventures, revealing, “We’re in the discovery phase, trying to figure out what’s next.” However, he did confirm his role as a producer in “Ready Player Two,” hinting at the possibility of the sequel moving forward in the near future.

“Ready Player Two,” based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name, is set in a dystopian future where individuals immerse themselves in a virtual reality universe known as the OASIS to escape the hardships of reality. The film, directed by Spielberg in 2018, boasted a star-studded cast including Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance.

The success of “Ready Player One” sparked immediate discussions about a potential sequel, with anticipation escalating further upon the release of Cline’s sequel novel in 2020. However, despite the buzz surrounding the project, the official green light from Warner Bros. is still pending.

Spielberg’s involvement in “Ready Player Two” as a producer is notable, particularly considering his historical reluctance to delve into sequels throughout his illustrious career. Nevertheless, his role in the project signifies his ongoing support and interest in expanding the cinematic universe of “Ready Player One.”
