Today voting opened for the race for European Movement chair, and three people are battling out for it, but is one person already emerging as a potential winner?

The European Movement UK has over 16,000 members and 200,000 supporters.

All members get a vote and voting is from 6 – 20 March.

What is the role?

The role is as follows…

“The mission of the European Movement is to campaign step by step towards rejoining the EU. We’re looking for a dynamic and committed person to lead our organisation –the largest cross-party, pro-European membership organisation in the UK, with 200,000 supporters, over 100 branches, and more than 16,000 members.

“The successful candidate, to be chosen by the EMUK membership in a secret ballot, will be expected to front our step-by-step campaign towards rejoining the EU and help grow our membership and reach in a watershed period for UK relations with Europe.

“They will take on both a public-facing role representing the EM effectively in the media and on platforms and taking responsibility for the Movement’s internal governance and strategy.  EM is committed to equality and would welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds.”

Mike Galsworthy

The person who seems to be gaining the most support is Dr Mike Galsworthy.

As you can see from tweet below he is very appreciative of all the support he receives.

Lawyer and activist Peter Stefanovic tweeted his support back in February: “I would love to see @mikegalsworthy as chair of the European Movement. His positive impact on social media & in the pro-EU community has been nothing short of magnificent. Relentless, forensic, articulate, always on point & with a love of Europe as bright as sunshine.”

What will he do?

On that matter he tweeted: “If elected chair of European Movement, I will seek to massively expand our branch network and to establish an EM parliamentary network and an EM business forum – – so as to strengthen EM at grassroots, business community, and parliamentary levels.”

Other contenders?

The other two contenders, as reported by North East bylines are:

Patience Wheatscroft

Patience Wheatcroft’s background is in journalism, having worked on the Daily Mail, the Times, and the Telegraph. She was a former editor of the Sunday Telegraph. She was created Baroness Wheatcroft in 2010, sitting in the House of Lords as a Conservative peer. She is now a cross-bench member.

Tom Brake

Tom Brake was a Liberal Democrat MP in London between 1997 and 2019, when he lost his seat at the 2019 General Election. He is now Director of Unlock Democracy.
