Former PM Boris Johnson has said he is giving his unredacted WhatsApp messages directly to the Covid inquiry.

It comes a day after the government said it would seek a judicial review of the inquiry’s demand that it hand over messages from the former prime minister and other officials.

The Cabinet Office – which supports the prime minister in running the government – has argued many of the messages are not relevant.

Johnson sidestep Cabinet?

He will provide unredacted WhatsApps to the Covid 19 Inquiry directly, he said in a letter today.

“The government yesterday decided to take legal action. It was not my decision to do so,” wrote Johnson. “While I understand the government’s position, I am not willing to let my material become a test case for others when I am perfectly content for the inquiry to see it.”

In the letter addressed to Heather Hallett, Boris Johnson said he would also like to share “any material” on his old phone. Johnson said he was previously told he could no longer access the device safely.

“In view of the urgency of your request I believe we need to test this advice, which came from the security services,” the letter said.
