Britain’s Department for International Trade has been axed in a major government shake-up, but without much fanfare.
The PM Rishi Sunak announced the creation of the new Department for Business and Trade with Sunak appointing Kemi Badenoch as its secretary of state.
This is the list of Sunak’s reshuffle.
Grant Shapps, secretary of state for energy security and net zero
Kemi Badenoch – secretary of state for business and trade
Lucy Frazer, secretary of state for culture, media, and sport
Michelle Donelan, secretary of state for science, innovation and technology
Greg Hands, Conservative Party chairman
Marco Forgione, director general of the Institute of Export & International Trade (IOE&IT) welcomed the move, “The merger of the trade and business departments is an opportunity to better integrate exports within the wider UK growth strategy.”
Sunak’s reasoning?
It was left to Nick Tyrone creator of “This Week in Brexitland” to sum up what he thinks Sunak’s changes meant.
He wrote: “Sunak’s decision to very quietly shut down and eliminate the Department for International Trade is one of those occasional subtle hints that he knows Brexit hasn’t worked and furthermore, knows it never will.”
