The hunting fans paper of choice The Telegraph reported on a letter from vets that claimed foxes are suffering a “catastrophic decline” because of the hunting ban.

A letter to ministers calls for a thorough scientific review after huge fall in population following 2004 law.

However, as ever, all is not quite what is appears. This happens a lot with the right-wing press.

Here is Nigel Farage banging on about it as well?

'It seems extraordinary that you ban fox hunting and the numbers decline.'

Nigel Farage reacts to a new paper from over 100 vets claiming that there has been a 'catastrophic decline' in fox numbers since the 2004 hunting ban.

Fox Hunting ban

It reported that the letter in fact admitted rural fox numbers are falling, but why you ask?

Surely fox hunters kill foxes…

Well, the devil is in the detail.

The reason the numbers are falling is that farmers/land managers are to blame.

To fill in the gap left by fox hunting, which only really got the weakest animals which couldn’t get away, foxes are being killed on an large scale.

a tougher zero tolerance attitude among land managers

The authors couched this claim by saying hunting was more discriminating in the foxes it killed – that it killed only the “weakest animals”. In other words, by the letter’s own admission, it’s gamekeepers and farmers that are responsible for an alleged plunge in rural fox numbers.

So swapping this ‘sport’ for large-scale culling of foxes is hardly a reason to bring back fox hunting.

Time to curb the farmers’ not bring back fox hunting?!

It's not a great argument for legalising fox hunting to say that, when it's banned, people find equally cruel ways to kill foxes (e.g. shooting vixens with dependent cubs). If numbers are falling, shouldn't foxes be given protection from all persecution? https://t.co/sicdAemLm5

In GB, most mammals are given little or no protection. There are exceptions (eg badgers, bats, 4 of the six species mustelids) but most of the rest can killed year-round, using a variety of methods and with no questions asked.

We know Nigel Farage is pro fox hunting but this is a ridiculous stretch to make even by his standards https://t.co/vi5p2BmBAS

Nigel – I am a very big @GBNews fan, but I find that ripping foxes and their cubs apart with dogs is vile.
Sorry, but there ARE humane methods of control available in 2023.
To "enjoy" the process of the death of an animal is sick.
