Yesterday there was a debate in Westminster Hall giving MPs a chance to discuss the fall-out of Brexit. There were not many speakers supporting leaving the EU, most were critical.

MPs raised issues including the impact of Brexit on the economy, touring musicians, young people, trade, tourism, access to European Union programmes like Erasmus and Horizon, and Northern Ireland.

The discussion was led by Martyn Day, an SNP MP whose party wants an independent Scotland to rejoin the EU.

He said “concerns have been expressed that no impact assessment has been carried out to assess the damage that Brexit has created”.

Public inquiry

MPs have urged the UK government to launch a public inquiry to assess the effects of Brexit in a parliamentary debate triggered by a petition.

A three-hour debate was held after 183,000 people signed a petition calling for a public inquiry into the impact of leaving the European Union.

Then Hilary Benn said: “Hilary Benn – “It was unforgivable to claim that we could have all our sovereignty, keep all the benefits of being a member of the EU & get further benefits on top of that… it’s simply wasn’t true… so brexiters are now in a state of confusion & denial.”

Unmitigated disaster

Layla Moran said: “This government’s botched Brexit deal with the EU has been an unmitigated disaster for this country. It has made the cost of living worse for every household in Britain. We are behind Russia for growth. It’s made all of us poorer.”

In response to the petition, the government said: “The UK’s departure from the EU was a democratic choice and the UK-EU institutions are functioning as intended. The Government does not believe this to be an appropriate subject for a public inquiry.”
