An article in Telegraph about tipping has ruffled a few feathers, and the searchlight has now been turned on the author.

It was written by the former editor of Waitrose Food magazine, William Sitwell.

He left the post with immediate effect after suggesting a series on “killing vegans, one by one”, back in 2018.

So what has he said now?

Well, the comment piece runs with the headline. “No one in Britain deserves a tip. British workers expect tips when they deliver barely passable service.”

So is Sitwell the kind of person who might struggle to pay a tip to someone on minimum wage?

It’s doubtful, let’s have a look at the Wikipedia entry about his background.

Sitwell is the younger son of Francis Trajan Sacheverell Sitwell (1935-2004) and the grandson of writer and critic Sir Sacheverell Sitwell, 6th Baronet. He is the great-nephew of writer Sir Osbert Sitwell, 5th Baronet and of poet and critic Dame Edith Sitwell. He is the heir presumptive to the Sitwell Baronetcy currently held by his elder brother Sir George Sitwell, 8th Barone

The thing is, I suspect most workers just want to be appreciated.

Then there is also this?

If bars and restaurants would pay their workers properly there would be no need for tipping.
