Reece Richards, an actor known for his role in Sex Education, has accused the Met Police of racially profiling and assaulting him after he witnessed a car crash in Fulham.

Richards claims that while returning home after a performance, police mistook him for one of the suspects fleeing from the crash and used excessive force, pepper-spraying, kicking, and handcuffing him. Despite being de-arrested once officers realised he was a bystander, Richards says the ordeal left him with severe injuries.

Richards described the distressing encounter, explaining that his mother was nearby, pleading with officers as they restrained him. He stated: “They pepper-sprayed me, kicked my legs out from under me, threw me to the ground, and handcuffed me.” The actor claims the incident exacerbated existing injuries from his performance, particularly affecting his back, ribs, and stomach.

The Met Police have confirmed that a complaint has been made regarding the incident and stated that the matter is being assessed by the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS). They noted that the officers involved are not subject to restrictions at this time, adding that their actions will be reviewed, including footage from body-worn cameras.

The incident has raised concerns about racial profiling within the police, with many calling for an in-depth investigation. Richards’ claims have garnered significant attention on social media, sparking debates about the treatment of ethnic minorities by law enforcement.
