On Christmas Eve 2022, 256 MPs voted against a Lords amendment to the Environment Act.

It would have placed a legal duty on water companies to make improvements in their sewerage systems and demonstrate improvements.

Now two months on over 50,000 people have signed a petition calling for the CEOs of two water companies to “swim in the mess they’ve made”.

The 38 Degrees campaign addresses the CEOs of South West Water, Susan Davy, and Southern Water, Lawrence Gosden, after their companies received one-star in the governmnent’s 2021 report Water and Sewerage companies in England: environmental performance.

Environment secretary Thérèse Coffey has now ordered England’s water and sewerage companies to share a “clear plan” to reduce spills from every single storm overflow.

In response, Campaign group Surfers Against Sewage said history was “farcically” repeating itself.

“Last year, the government ordered water companies to produce sewage action plans, and now similar lacklustre plans are being pitched as if new. We need action, not more plans,” said Izzy Ross, SAS campaigners manager.

The government’s “lack of backbone has let the polluters run wild”, she claimed.

4.

Typical govt policy: make a mess and then expect praise for their plans to clean up their mess.

Next: not actually carrying out their plan.

After that: quoting their plan as evidence of what they’ve achieved. https://t.co/3TymXb4XBX

This is gaslighting on a scale never yet seen. Your party just passed a bill that allows water companies to pump raw sewage into rivers, seas & on beaches for the next 15 years. This while water companies give huge bonuses & dividends and build no new infrastructure . #ToryLies
