According to a story by The Times, politicians in India have responded angrily to Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s comments, seriously jeopardising the UK prime minister’s main trade pact with India.
Last week, the Home Secretary expressed “concerns” about the trade pact, expressing concerns that it will increase immigration to the UK, stating that the majority of visa overstayers were Indians.
She was reported as saying by The Spectator magazine, “I do have some reservations. Look at migration in this country – the largest group of people who overstay are Indian migrants.”
According to the story, the “disrespectful” remarks left India’s government leaders and officials “shocked and saddened.”
The sources from the Indian government also stated that as a result of the home secretary’s comments, the “relationship has taken a step back.”
Although there is still a lot of goodwill, they went on to say that if certain individuals remain in the administration, the conversations will come to an end.
They encouraged Truss to publicly “disassociate” herself from Braverman’s comments if she wanted to keep the contract.
The Indian government is pushing for more work and study visas for its citizens, as well as a brand-new visa that is modelled after a deal with Australia and New Zealand that allows persons under 35 to live in the UK for up to three years.
