Tory millionaires demand scrapping of inheritance tax & sympathy in short supply

"Definitely an excellent plan and the money could be raised instead by putting a tax on each parcel that goes out of a food bank," said one person sarcastically.

Our esteemed PM Rishi Sunak is facing yet another Tory rebellion. Now the right-wing of the party is demanding inheritance tax is scrapped all together.

Nadhim Zahawi, sacked as Tory chairman over his own shady tax dealings, is leading the charge.

There are over 50 rebels calling for the change.

Who else is in this motley crew? Mega-rich Jacob Rees-Mogg, Priti Patel and also lettuce loser Liz Truss.

Inheritance tax

Writing in The Telegraph Mr Zahawi said: “Inheritance tax is that other spectre that haunts us alongside death.

“As well as being morally wrong to take someone’s assets on their death, it also creates all sorts of inefficient and damaging distortions in our personal finances, and the wider economy.”

He added: “The Prime Minister and the Chancellor are doing admirable work to help people through a global inflationary spike and war on our continent.

“By abolishing inheritance tax, they can show that they back families in their desire to pass on their hard-earned savings to the next generation.”

Couldn’t make it up

Inheritance tax – a 40% charge on property above Government-set thresholds – raised more than £7billion for the Treasury last year.

Prof Colin Talbot might sum this up for you?

“Have I got this right?

“Nadhim Zahawi was sacked for failing to disclose he was being investigated by HMRC for tax dodging.

“Now he wants to change the rules to make it easier to dodge inheritance tax?

“Couldn’t make it up?”

Here is one thread on the matter which might balance the argument the other way, but it might well make no difference, but it is only fair.

1.

Three key facts on inheritance tax:

* if we abolish it, we're losing £6bn of tax revenue to benefit the wealthiest 4%

* the 40% rate is one of the highest in the world – most people think it's unfair

* but the very wealthy pay about 20%, thanks to over-generous exemptions

— Dan Neidle (@DanNeidle) June 1, 2023

2.

The obvious answer: scrap/limit the exemptions, and use the revenues raised to reduce the rate. 25%, or perhaps even 20%.

Make it a fair tax, applying at a fair rate to the upper-middle class, and at that same rate to the very wealthy.

3.

We know this is possible, because other countries do it. This chart shows plenty of other countries raising the same inheritance tax revenue as the UK, despite having a rate that's half of ours.

UK inheritance tax is uniquely rubbish. Let's fix it. pic.twitter.com/qsNTSLyr4u

Reactions

These people REALLY don’t want this idea to come into place.

1.

Tory millionaires demand scrapping of inheritance tax, only 7% of estates pay it. Rich dodge it via trusts.

Tories don't demand end to austerity, wage cuts or profiteering; taxing capital gains at the same rate as dividends, wealth tax.

It is class war.https://t.co/DVOc7PFh6N

Tories are the party of privilege for the privileged and by the privileged. Inheritance Tax is a nuisance for the privileged.

Any politician labelling inheritance tax "morally wrong" needs to explain exactly how much they personally stand to benefit from it being scrapped. pic.twitter.com/cBavqb0Jo6

"The feeling stays with us until our last breath, and even beyond"… "Inheritance tax is that other spectre that haunts us alongside death".

Nadhim Zahawi is having a normal one. Oh, and by the way, fewer than one in 26 people pay inheritance tax on death. pic.twitter.com/cwc8bzBx2S

While we're talking about inheritance tax a reminder that the govt has removed the lifetime allowance on pension pots and they can be inherited tax free. A massive loophole.

Here's a solution for Nadhim Zahawi & the other greedy tories to avoid paying inheritance tax: become the King or, better still, move to Monaco.https://t.co/jqQzwOM7ia
