Former US President Bill Clinton has been in Northern Ireland this week to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement that he helped to broker along with Tony Blair as well as former Irish Toaiseach Bertie Ahern.

It finally brought relative peace to the Island of Ireland, after thousands of lives were lost during ‘the troubles.’

But Clinton said Brexit didn’t help, at all.

Speaking to BBC Ulster, Clinton said: “Brexit threw a clinker in there.

Barriers

“I think that finding a political solution to that has taken some doing and I think they’re pretty close with this Windsor agreement. I expect that in the not too distant future the barriers to getting the government up again will be removed.”

“I think everybody knows economically, politically, socially they’d be worse off if they packed it in over the current level of disagreement.”

Asked about his talks with DUP’s Jeffrey Donaldson, Clinton said: “I left that meeting more optimistic than I entered it.”

Clinton also has said it is a “miracle” that Brexit did not destroy the Good Friday Agreement.

On getting Stormont back up and running, @BillClinton says people must focus "on what is practically at issue, not rhetorically, not ideologically." And that power-sharing was never meant to be "the engine of obstruction".

Brexit harmed everything good in this country and has no benefits at all for the man in the street, but benefits the Tories by giving them unfettered power. https://t.co/TCj8MQPeX2
