’30p’ Lee Anderson uses staff member ‘poor Katy’ to prove foodbank point – but it’s backfired

“I have never, and would never, use my staff as a political football."

Lee Anderson was at it again, this time he used one of his staff members to prove that people on lower wages don’t need necessarily food banks.

Lee has some support from his own party, as you can see from Simon Clarke’s tweet.

Thank you Lee. My point exactly.

You can have huge respect for people working in our public services and also be clear that if you are earning £35,000, unless there are very particular circumstances, you shouldn’t need to use a foodbank. https://t.co/QnQgFa5HXW

He posted Katy’s pic, we assume she agreed to it, and wrote: “Katy works for me. She is single & earns less than 30k, rents a room for £775pcm in Central London, has student debt, £120 a month on travelling to work saves money every month, goes on foreign holidays & does not need to use a foodbank. Katy makes my point really well.’

The comment prompted fierce criticism from other MPs.

For example, Lib Dem Jamie Stone who said: “I have never, and would never, use my staff as a political football.

“This is in seriously bad taste and is an awful way to admit that you don’t pay your staff enough.”

Quite a few people felt sorry for her as ‘Poor Katy,’ began trending.

1.

Calling all London employers. Please offer poor Katy a better paid and more rewarding role to save her from working for 30p Lee! #SaveKaty https://t.co/8SmMP6JDI9

This is an entirely inappropriate tweet from a Member of Parliament. I would be devastated if my boss tweeted out my financial situation for the world to see. This is shameful – poor Katy. Hope Mr Speaker does something about this. https://t.co/YHU2dcmTHh

Lovely to meet Katy, now do the costs of someone who has two kids, who won't – for a start – be renting a room for £775 per month in London. https://t.co/l2dGWHRTt4

Then people began to look into Katy, so now the pressure has also been put on her shoulders, as you can see from the following tweets.

Perhaps this person has a point though?

This is a grim thing to do. Go after the man not the pawn.
